This ground beef and cabbage stew recipe is easy to make and the stew will cook for about an hour, but it will only need about 15 minutes of your focus and attention, so it’s a good midweek dinner as well. You can switch the fresh cabbage with savoy cabbage as well, it will be just as delicious. Either way, make sure to serve it with a generous dollop of sour cream, you will thank me later.

HOW TO MAKE BEEF CABBAGE STEW

You don't need a lot of focus to make this dish. It's really simple:

  1. Sauté the onions in a pot
  2. Add garlic, spices and ground beef, cook

How can I adjust the taste

CABBAGE - Use fresh green cabbage or substitute with fresh savoy cabbage, it will be just as delicious.

OYSTER SAUCE It's optional but adds a wonderful umami flavor - so good.

Storing and freezing leftovers

Store the Ground Beef Cabbage Stew in a fridge, covered, for up to three days. This one-pot cabbage stew also freezes really well. Once it's completely cold, transfer it to freezer bags and freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat well before serving again.

METHOD

  • cook the veggies and meat

    Place a pot over medium-low heat. Add the vegetable oil and diced onion. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the diced garlic and chili. Sauté for a minute, then add the spices (cumin, sweet paprika, coriander, oregano, salt, and pepper), and stir. Sauté for another minute. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the ground beef. Cook until browned as it cooks, 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  • Add the cabbage

    Add balsamic vinegar and diced tomatoes to the beef in the pot. Sauté for 2 - 3 minutes. Clean and quarter your green cabbage. Separate the cabbage leaves. Reduce the heat and add the cabbage leaves to the meat in the pot. Season with oyster sauce, soy sauce, bay leaf, and chopped parsley. Pour in the water, stir, cover with a lid and cook for about 45 - 60 minutes. Occasionally stir.

  • Serve

    When your Ground Beef Cabbage Stew is cooked, check the seasoning and season to taste with salt and pepper. Divide between six soup bowls and serve with a generous dollop of sour cream. Enjoy.
